Treat Your Internet Provider Retention Department with Respect

I live in the US and my area is only served with one Internet provider. Given how essential a wireless router, having only one provider for Internet can put one in a bind when prices change.

The Internet provider in my area provides incentives to join when you’re a new customer with deals that last for one year.

After that year, that deal ends and you pay the “full rate” for your service. If you get a flyer for the new incentive, you do not qualify because you’re an existing customer.

What do you do?

There are different options out there - the one I have found the best so far:

Speak to the retention department directly.

My Internet provider has one and contact them directly.

I have found talking to sales will have you upgrading your plan (that’s their job!) and may even screw around your bill even more. My Internet provider’s sales department can only access certain parts of my service.

The retention department has full capabilities for my service and can offer anything to you, even the existing promotions.

The most important part about speaking to the retention department:

Treat them with respect.

The incentive for the retention department is different than sales, so they can help you in a way sales cannot. Being respectful with the retention department will serve you well.

It is kind of like treating the DMV with respect - the better you prepare, the better chance of a good experience.

I say this because after years on the same Internet provider and having rates change on me, I finally figured out the play-book to have the current promotion. The retention department is your friend when negotiating new Internet plan.
