How Rdio Reconnected Me with Music I Love
When I got a year of Rdio streaming music from my hack at the Spotify NYC Hackathon, around 2013. I was in a weird spot in life. I stopped listening to my favorite music, trance, for awhile. I just couldn’t get into the same DJs as before.
Maybe I was downloading all of my music and I curated that heavily. Focusing on getting tracks that created the excitement when I first listened to trance.
Essentially, I was in a “musical downward spiral” - the trance I listened to didn’t get me excited, so I listened to it less, as I listened less, I got out of touch with what was new in trance.
This is not a good situation for me at the time.
Rdio got me out of this downward spiral - by giving me access to lots of music that I didn’t have to download. I could just listen to music right away without lag or thinking of storage space requirements.
One thing awesome was the Discovery aspect of Rdio - by listening to the stuff I did like on Rdio, suggestions to newer stuff appeared and I listened to new artists.
The moment I fell in love with trance again was when the Rdio machine recommended John O’Callaghan’s Subculture 2013 mix album. I fell in love with it instantly and kept listening to it over and over. Discovering new artists from the mix - even buying other trance albums.
Whenever I look back at my music listening history - I remember this trance rediscovery period and I thank Rdio for making it happen.
Rdio might not be around anymore, yet, I appreciate and will always remember it.
Thank you Rdio!
Note: if you want to listen to Subculture 2013, you can listen on YouTube.
