Red Green Repeat Adventures of a Spec Driven Junkie

Losing in football is expensive!

When following sports leagues in North America, such as the NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, etc. I realize there are a certain set of teams in the leagues that just keep losing and losing.

Although losing sucks psychologically - there is a reward in these leagues for the teams at the bottom:

Higher draft picks for next season

A team at the bottom of the league would choose first for the new players coming into the sport.

This idea makes sense - by picking the best new player, you have a better chance in the next season.

As I think this through - does this make sense? A new rookie joins a team that isn’t working can somehow magically change things around? Taking the team from the bottom of the league to the top?

(If you know where this regularly happened in the past - let me know!)!

In this post, football leagues in Europe push bottom league teams down to another league all together.

Losing costs twice as much in football than in North American sports league: being at the bottom and then relegation!

For a relegated team to get back to the previous standing - they would be at the top of the lower league for a season, get promoted, then be at the bottom for next season.

In football - you can’t give up, even when you’re at the bottom!
