Potty Training Disaster
Every parent makes mistakes, this is especially true of their first child.
Looking back, the one mistake I learned the most from:
Only Potty Train When Child is Ready
I jumped the gun early on potty training my first son. I read all the books on potty training. I am potty trained.
WHAT COULD GO WRONG???
In short: everything!
We tried all the approaches mentioned in the books, bought every tool, gave every reward, praised all the behaviors, I don’t even remember what we did now.
What I do remember: all the trauma on both my son and us.
I know he was trying hard, he just couldn’t do it as fast as we wanted.
That’s what made it even worse for all of us. Each failure would become a vicious cycle and it’s frustrating for everyone.
Giving Up
I’m glad we just gave up trying to potty train early.
Over time - my son just figured out potty training on his own and it’s been great!
There are accidents here and there - we all know everyone is trying their best. We learn new habits to improve for next time.
Best of all, things keep getting better.
As a parent, no matter what books promise on training any behavior (i.e. sleep, potty, food, etc.)
Just wait until they’re ready - because at the end, they will only be a baby once.
Enjoy that time together - it’s going to pass faster than you think!
