Hunting and Farming in Modern Companies

When I think about the basic human endeavors, like hunting and farming, and the relationship to modern companies, almost every company is a hunting to farming machine.

  • Every sales division in a company “hunts” for new clients.
  • Every operations division “farm” current clients.

Cave Farmer to Customer Support

The more successful a company, the more it can hunt for new and farm current clients.

A company needs both of these divisions, just like humans need to hunt and farm for their food.

Isn’t that crazy?? That we as a species are still doing the same basic thing since the earliest of us??

In my career at a company, I had a disdain for the sales team. Mostly because they always overpromised the client and engineering had to deliver. At the same time, they just had such a different vibe than those around me in the company.

The operations team is larger than the sales team. The more complex the item sales sells, the more larger the operations team to support the sale. (Just like when a hunter gets a large kill - the team that process that kill must be larger.)

Sales and operations are essential to modern companies, just like hunting and farming were essential to survival in ancient times.
