Work: Farming and Hunting
When I think about food, there are two ways humans get food:
With farming, the farmer know what they will get as food, because they planted the seeds, raised the animals, maintained everything, etc.
There is no question what a farmer will get in terms of food - it’s intentional.
With hunting, the hunter does not know what they will get as food. There might be something easy to catch that’s small or large. Something harder to catch that’s small or larger.
There’s always a variable for hunting - it’s a gamble.
Why am I talking about farming and hunting??
In a way, there are parallels in terms of our work. Imagine if you can classify work into these categories:
- work with known output
- work with unknown output
Layer onto that the remote vs in-person, and I wonder if this is true:
- remote work is work with known output
- in-person work is work with unknown output
If you have a good idea of your work output, is there a need to be in-person?
If you don’t know your work output, it would be harder to work remotely.
Now, work comes in all shapes and sizes - where does your work fit in??
With COVID-19, all work shifted to remote - and essentially became a known output. Anything unknown adapted or died.
As we move past COVID-19, with all the remote tools with us, what is unknown about our work?
