Falling in Love with My G4 Cube
This article (archive) on Apple being a master in transitioning to different CPU architectures caused my friend and I to remember all the Apple computers we owned.
These are mine:
Computer | Architecture |
---|---|
Macintosh LC | 68020 |
iBook (Blondie Blue) | PowerPC G3 |
Mac G4 Cube | PowerPC G4 |
PowerBook 15 | Intel i7 |
MacBook | Intel i3 |
MacBook Air | Apple Silicon |
So, wow - I have owned all of them somehow.
When I read an article like that - I just miss all of these machines - especially my Mac G4 Cube.
I held onto my G4 Cube for too long - I bought it used in 2002, just after its dicontinuation and I loved it. I brought it around the world with me - three different countries, three different power systems, and more than 10 different moves. I had boot up CDs, expansion cards, expansion hard drives, graphic adapters, I considered getting a proper power supply for my region.
At the end, I gave it up - I stopped using it for too long - and when I had my MacBook, I realize computer power increased so much, I could do everything the G4 Cube could do with far, far less.
The G4 Cube wasn’t the only computer I had that obsession with - I liberated a DELL workstation from work and used it as my personal machine for a LONG time. I loved having workstation class components in a personal machine. A 15k RPM enterprise grade hard drive.
When a computer is good - it creates an emotional attachment. Even when newer things come out - there’s an attachment to the model you have. Maybe in some cases for me, I kept things going for a long time.
My love for these computers pushed too far - I probably lost time and energy keeping the systems working for me, even when newer models outperformed my old systems. Standardized ports such as USB and HDMI definitely helps increase the longevity of computers! I kept saying I didn’t need to upgrade.
After getting my MacBook and seeing how much of modern computing I missed out by holding onto old computers - I said I would not fall in love with a computer that much again.
That is, until I got my MacBook Air M1…
