Red Green Repeat Adventures of a Spec Driven Junkie

Remote Work is a Skill

For those that worked before 2020 and part of an in person team that treated a remote like a benefit, remember what remote work was like then?

Remember being the only “remote person” on a call while everyone else was together?

Remote Work is a Skill

You got things done, the team got things done - the biggest problem: nobody knew how to get things done remotely.

Remote working is a skill - it’s a skill that everyone has to build.

  • individually: get work done in a space that is not typically associated with day-to-day work.
  • team: account for the people not in the same physical space as you.

With 2020 - everyone learned the remote working skill whether they wanted to or not AND they learned the skill fast.

Everything went remote - meetings, happy hours, welcome, end-of-year, off-sites, on-sites, farewells, team building, games, scavenger hunts, meet-ups, networking, learning, schooling, testing, conferences, etc.

The best thing - everyone has the remote work skill. It’s exactly what my friend, VV, says:

Remote work is a skill like riding a bicycle, once you get it, you remember it forever.

That’s where we are at now as a society - we all gained the: “remote skill”.

The best thing - this remote skill opens up doors to even better things. It’s a fantastic tool for us to engage with others.

Question is: with your remote skill, what do you want to do next?
