Jam Writing: Essential Life Tool
Use Jam Writing when you want answers to your life’s tough questions:
- Which decision should I make?
- What is best for me?
- What do I do next??
The technique is great because it gets messages from your heart in front of you with minimal influence from your mind (that is in the way of getting the message out.) AND it’s a technique your mind trusts because the message came from your heart, no where else.
By seeing what your heart is really saying - your mind can align with your heart better.
How to Jam Write
Items You Need
- a timing device (15 minutes max)
- a writing instrument
- two pieces of blank paper
- about 30 minutes of silent relaxed time
- a comfortable writing position
Directions
- Take the question you have for yourself and write on the top of a sheet.
- Start the timing device for 15 minutes.
- Write whatever comes to your mind regarding the question, related or not. If the timer is ticking, you are writing!
- When you reach the next line, take the other sheet of paper and cover the written line.
- Repeat #3 until the timing device finishes. (Use back page if you have run out of space.)
- At the end of the time, take a moment and breathe.
- Read what you wrote and underline any insights from your writing.
- Take action OR Jam Write again.
Practice
I recommend jam writing the first time with a personal question that only you know, such as:
Who is my first love?
By practicing, you build trust in the process with your mind. I cried when I saw what I wrote for the above question and discovered more about my first love than what I thought I knew.
My Experience
After discovering Jam Writing and using the technique for my tough questions, I found this is the best tool to get at what is in my heart.
It’s also essential to have the second sheet to cover up what you write. Once you stop writing for a moment and your eyes wander to what you wrote, your mind will start analyzing the writing - putting you back into your mind!
As someone who “thinks all day” - I think I know what is on my heart, and that’s never worked out because my mind misaligned me from my heart.
When using Jam Writing to figure out what’s on my heart, it aligns my heart and mind and life works out - no matter how crazy things seem.
