Email Address & Government Accounts
I lost email account access to one of my main email addresses - and luckily, I regained it. 😌
One realization is I use that email address for government accounts - like validation of my identity or right to be in the country.
By losing the registered email account access - if I ever needed that information on the government account, it would effectively be impossible.
That made me think: private companies manage all email accounts, that are all effectively “free”. Termination of the account may happen at any time and for any reason - as I probably agreed to this (and a whole lot more) when signing up for the account.
Or even worse - if another organization steals my account.
Here I am in a situation where a private company controls one of the methods (email) for me to access government services.
By losing email account access, the government service would also be inaccessible.
Just realizing this made me rethink how I organize my digital life.
