Investing in Knowledge Workers
I was thinking of what happens when a “company” invests in a worker, especially a “knowledge worker”.
In the age of information, knowledge workers are essential. All the information is only useful when consumers can access information relevant to them.
To make that happen, enter knowledge workers - to bridge information to consumers.
The funny thing about knowledge workers - every investment the company makes into them, they lose that value the moment the worker is not part of the company.
Sure - documentation created by the worker can help, that just creates more information for remaining workers to interpret and apply.
Ironically, the company pays worker for their time there AND there’s an investment into them by the company.
The company loss when a worker leaves is:
- a worker
- knowledge company invested in the worker
- requiring more workers to interpret any information created by the worker
With this perspective and you are a company executive, how likely are you to “invest in your knowledge workers”?? How would you invest? Why?
Just food for thought.
