New Manager - Raise and Promotion Request: Propagating Changes
This is a continuation of a series - the first article is here
Why would you have to “present a case” like a lawyer to get your team member a raise or promotion?
Because your boss will take that information and present it to their boss for approval.
Why?
A raise or promotion will always increase financial requirements of the team. The financial team projects the company’s expenses years in advance - so a sudden change will require large changes.
So, the evidence you use to advocate for your team member is important:
- You have to convince your boss.
- Your boss has to use that evidence to convince THEIR boss.
- Your boss’ boss will have to convince finance to remodel their projections for the whole company.
Hence, the better the evidence, the higher likelihood everyone will grant your direct’s request.
This process generates alignment with your team member and the company’s desires.
